14 Things About Nutrition You Should Know

1. Keep things in context. Sure, bananas and mangoes are healthy, but eating these high-sugar fruits might not be a great idea for someone who has problems digesting sugar (e.g. pre-diabetic or diabetic).

2. Grains have only been around for about 10,000 years. Compare that to the human history of 2.4 million years. Many grains contain a protein called gluten which many people have difficulty digesting. If you're not one of these people, then eating grains isn't an issue.

3. Saturated fat is very misunderstood. Take coconut oil for example. The medium-chain triglycerides ARE healthy for you. Now, a Bigmac from McDonalds, on the other hand = NOT good for you.

4. "Animal products are only as good as the diet of the animal and living conditionings of the animal." --Jonny Bowden. You are what you eat applies in all cases!

5. Did you know that "free range" on an egg carton means that the chickens simply has "access" to the range? It doesn't specify a time frame or mean that the chickens even go to the range.

6. What does the word "natural" really mean on a food label? What's so natural about coming in a plastic box? Just because something says it's natural doesn't necessarily mean that it is good for you.

7. There is no such thing as a "superfood." No one food is going to give you everything your body needs! Eat a variety of good foods to give you everything you need.

8. Did you know that soy and beer have estrogenic compounds? If you're trying to build muscle, you may want to avoid these foods. Estrogenic compounds can alter testosterone levels.

9. Cortisol, a.k.a. the "stress hormone", is a hormone produced by the adrenal cortex that increases blood pressure and blood sugar (gluconeogenesis) and reduces the immune response. It also promotes lipid and protein breakdown and reduces the uptake of protein into the muscles. There are many factors that affect cortisol levels in the body. Sleep is one of them and a lack of Zs can raise cortisol levels. So get some sleep!

10. Did you know that milk is one of the top 7 food allergens? You may want to see a specialist if you suspect that you may have a milk allergy.

11. Grass-fed beef is healthier than grain-fed beef.

12. Acidic vs. Basic. On the pH scale, 0-7 is acidic and 7-14 is basic. Seven is considered neutral. Human blood has a pH of roughly 7.4. The foods we eat can alter our body’s pH level. For example, meat, grains and sugar acidify the blood bring the pH lower than the ideal 7.4. An acidic blood means reduced muscle strength, increased cortisol levels (mentioned above), loss of Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium and other minerals. So what’s basic? Fruits and vegetables! Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to balance your intake of acidic foods and to reduce your risk of acidifying your blood!

13. HFCS – High Fructose Corn Syrup…it’s made from corn, so it’s good for me right? Oh boy…watch this commercial: http://tinyurl.com/crcor9. Now watch the parody and listen to the truth: http://tinyurl.com/5kwakk.

Even this kid hates high fructose corn syrup!

Don’t get me wrong, fructose shouldn't be avoided all together as it is fruit sugar, so it’s found naturally in fruits, like apples. But when it’s isolated and highly concentrated, it’s evil! Fructose is digested differently than regular sugar. It doesn’t trigger the brain to tell you you’re full, so you keep on eating and it’s actually been linked to increasing insulin resistance! Since it’s cheaper to make than regular sugar, manufacturers benefit from it, so they use it in almost everything found at the grocery store. One common beverage that most can relate to drinking contains HFCS – POP! Stop drinking pop…don’t drink the diet crap, don’t drink the zero calorie crap…just avoid it all together, please!

She drank too much soda.

14. "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper." - Adele Davis – a pioneer in the health movement during the mid 20th century. Basically, don’t eat lots at night…and eating like a king doesn’t mean Denny’s.
