Effective Weight Training for Triathletes

If you don't know much about cars and you look under the hood, you're probably going to be as lost as I was trying to figure my way around St. John's, NL this summer (if you haven't been here before, there is no grid system like in Vancouver - buildings and roads were randomly placed around the city over the years and for some reason, there is no straight road anywhere - I'm still trying to figure it out!).

Anyways, same goes for someone who doesn't know much about resistance training or program design for that matter - when they look into a gym and see all this fancy equipment and weights, they are just as lost as buddy looking under the hood.  It's daunting.  It's scary...and it's very intimidating.  Where should you start?  What exercises are good?  What will help me be better at my sport?  All these are common questions that need to be answered so you can be EFFECTIVE in the weight room.

I'm proud to share with you my latest publication in this month's Triathlon Magazine Canada - September/October 2011 - Volume 6/Issue 5 - titled "More than Swim, Bike, Run: Effective Weight Training."

I just picked up the magazine this afternoon from Chapters.

It's a four page spread and it's the FEATURE TRAINING ARTICLE on page 68.

In it, I discuss the better alternatives that will help you become a faster stronger triathlete.  For example, triathletes sit far too much during the week, let alone the amount they sit when training.  Why warm up on the recumbent bike and further tighten those tight hip flexors when you can promote tissue quality and improve joint mobility and flexibility with a foam rolling and dynamic mobility warm up?  I discuss a major muscle that should be foam rolled and I also go over many exercise options that are superior to their machine-based-cousins.

Here are snap-shots of the piece - I didn't scan it because it just came out and I might get in trouble!

Let me know what you think,

Thanks for reading,
