Ankle Sprains and Trail Running

Trail Run Ezine Aus/NZ Cover
I love running in the trails.   I always did.  The feeling of being one with nature...with the smells and quietness of running through the trees and the sounds of the birds and water flowing down the stream...nothing beats it!

What's perfect about living in St. John's Newfoundland are the vast amount of running trails near our apartment.  There are tons of gravel trails all around town.  There is an awesome trail that climbs the backside of Signal Hill that I love running.  There is also the East Coast Trail which has an amazing view of St. John's and the ocean.

What's terrible about running through the trails is spraining your ankle.  I was doing a long run back when I was competing, on the Burnaby Mountain trails in Burnaby BC called Melanie's Trail.  It was Fall and the trail was covered with yellow and orange leaves.  I didn't see the tree root that was covered by the leaves and bailed.  I rolled my ankle so hard, I heard "snap crackle pop." I had to rest for a second and gather my self.  I tried to semi-walk "it off" but was in a lot of pain.  The tough part was that I was in the middle of the mountain with my friend John and we had to get back down the mountain and back to our cars which were parked at least another 10 minutes from the trail.  To make a long story short, I managed to hobble-run down the mountain trail very carefully and made it back to my car.  It turned out to be a 3rd degree sprain, which kept me cross training for a few weeks.

Anyway, the point of all this is to share with you my latest article.  This one I'm quite proud of because it's my first international appearance outside of Canada and the States.  Check out my latest article called The Reign of a Sprain is a Bloody Pain in the Australia/New Zealand Trail Run Ezine (Vol 1 Ed 2 - Spring 2011).  This piece on page 144 in the Medic Section discusses ankle sprains in trail runners.  I also list a few rehab exercises as well.  For those that are unfamiliar with a "ezine" it's an online-magazine AKA electronic magazine hence E-Zine.

You can download it here for FREE.

Here is a screenshot of the article (which looks awesome by the way!!)

Make sure you check it out; why wouldn't you...it's FREE!
