About Me

Who is this guy?

That's me to the left doing a box jump with approach (56").  I have been working out and playing sports my entire life - I don't know any other lifestyle.  I have a passion for strength, conditioning, health and fitness - you better watch out because it's kinda contagious.

Jon the Academic

My name is Jon-Erik Kawamoto.

I was born and raised in Burnaby, BC, Canada but now live in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

I graduated from Simon Fraser University (SFU), Burnaby, BC, Canada in the fall of 2005 with a Kinesiology Cooperative Education degree and certificates in Health and Fitness Studies and Applied Human Nutrition.

I am currently pursuing a Master's of Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR) Degree at Memorial University with Professor David Behm here in St. John's.  I have been lucky enough to actually teach a first year HKR course and I also help other HKR faculty as a TA (teaching assistant).

Jon the Coach

I have been an athletic and personal trainer for over 6 years.  I am a Strength Coach and Personal Trainer at Definitions Fitness Company here in St. John's.  I am fortunate to be surrounded by great trainers and a wealth of knowledge.  It's the best team/gym in town.  I’m a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (with the National Strength and Conditioning Association) and Certified Exercise Physiologist (with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology).  I am also Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Level-1 certified.

I apply scientific research and personal and in the trenches experience to attain the best results possible for my clients based on their goals and ambitions.  Many of my clients include endurance athletes, firefighters, police officers, fitness enthusiasts and athletes of various disciplines including judo, basketball, water polo, soccer and MMA.

Jon the Runner

I competed in track and field, cross-country and road races for over 9 years – club and varsity.   I have personal bests of 15:13 5km road and 32:15 10km road.  I know what it’s like to run 100 miles per week…I know what it’s like to be disappointed with injuries…I know what it’s like to cross the finish line knowing I gave it my best.  My strength coaching experience with runners ranges from beginners to elites (highly competitive to nationally carded) and everyone in between.  Mizuno has been kind enough to sponsor me with awesome shoes and clothing since 2007.  I am a regular contributor to the Mizuno Run Club blog on the iRun.com website.  I have so much passion about running and strength training, so I started up a blog tailored to making runners stronger - www.StrongerRunner.com.

I have been lucky enough to contribute my knowledge about running and strength training for running regularly to Canadian Running Magazine.  My first contribution was in 2009 and I've had 8 articles since, with another on the way.

Jon the Firefighter

Some people don't know this about me, but I am honored to have worked a short career as a firefighter with the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.  My passion for strength and conditioning pulled me back into the field full time.  I met a lot of great people and made a lot of great friends along the way.  It was a hard decision, but moving on has allowed me to give 100% to my passion, which is the health and fitness industry.
